Technology

From the bench to the grid.

A commercial microgrid, an instrumented flow battery lab and two field demonstrators, all tied together by one data acquisition and monitoring platform.

01 · Microgrid platform

Commercial home-and-shop microgrid

Our first operating system and the backbone of our data platform. It teaches us real load profiles, the customer experience, interconnection and utility economics.

  • 20–30 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery
  • Energy management system
  • Whole-site, circuit-level monitoring
  • Backup (critical-loads) panel with islanding
  • Grid-interconnected under utility permission to operate
20–30 kWhLFPGrid-tied + backup
02 · Flow battery lab

Bench-scale research and development

Where we validate stack designs and answer the key question: can we practically achieve 75% round-trip efficiency?

  • Bench-scale iron flow system (primary path)
  • Small vanadium system for comparison
  • Electrochemical workstation
  • Pumps, flow meters, sensors, PLC and DAQ
  • Contained lab with full safety equipment
75% RTE goalIron chemistry
03 · Field demonstrator

1 kW / 10 kWh flow battery skid

Built as a small utility demonstration skid, not a science project, and designed for unattended, automated daily cycling and a year of reliability testing.

  • Outdoor-rated enclosure
  • HDPE tanks with secondary containment
  • Commercial-grade pumps
  • PLC with automatic safety shutdowns
  • Bidirectional inverter and SCADA dashboard
1 kW10 kWhDaily cycling
04 · Containerized unit

5 kW / 30–50 kWh demonstration system

A transportable system that can be shown to utilities, universities, grant programs and investors.

  • 20-ft container with HVAC and insulation
  • 5 kW stack, tanks and electrolyte for 30–50 kWh
  • Grid-tied 5 kW inverter
  • Fire and gas detection and suppression
  • Remote monitoring

Why flow batteries

Built for long duration and long life.

In a flow battery, energy is stored in liquid electrolyte held in external tanks and pumped through a cell stack. That design brings advantages for stationary storage.

Scalable energy

Power and energy sized separately

The stack sets the power; the tanks set the energy. Adding hours of storage means adding electrolyte, not more stacks.

Safety

Water-based electrolyte

Aqueous electrolytes are non-flammable, which supports safe operation near homes, businesses and critical facilities.

Materials

Iron as our primary path

We focus on iron chemistry, using abundant, low-cost materials, while testing vanadium at small scale for comparison.

Data & safety

Every system measured. Every system protected.

Data acquisition and SCADA

  • Target of at least 98% data capture from day one
  • Monthly review of availability, round-trip efficiency, degradation and maintenance for each system
  • Live SCADA dashboards and remote access
  • A maintenance and event log for every system

Safety by design

  • Secondary containment for all electrolyte
  • Safety review before any chemistry is purchased
  • Automatic shutdowns verified before unattended cycling
  • Fire and gas detection in enclosed systems
